Dr. Shinwoo Choi has been a faculty member at the School of Social Work at Texas State University since Fall 2020. Before this role, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of North Florida (UNF) for three years. She holds a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) with a focus on policy practice from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Additionally, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from McGill University in Canada.

Following her MSSW, Dr. Choi gained a range of practical experience, including serving as a program coordinator for the Group Cognitive Behavior Therapy (GCBT) aimed at Latina immigrant mothers, working as a clinical social work volunteer in a public middle school, and acting as a clinical research coordinator in the Public Health department.

Her research is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of diverse families. Her specific interests are twofold: first, investigating the challenges related to natural disaster preparedness faced by individuals with vulnerabilities such as mental or physical health issues, language barriers, and limited resources due to poverty; and second, exploring the harmful effects of racial microaggressions on racial minority individuals and their coping strategies.

In her free time, Dr. Choi enjoys hiking, swimming, reading, and engaging in arts and crafts with her two daughters.
