Child Welfare Partnership Program for Current Social Work Students

The Title IV-E Child Welfare Partnership (CWP) offers a program for current BSW or MSW students who want to work in child welfare after graduation.  If selected for the program, these Social Work students at Texas State University receive a $7000 stipend in exchange for agreeing to complete their final full-time internship at Child Protective Services (CPS) in the central Texas area.  These students sign a contract to work at CPS in a Title IV-E position for a minimum of 8 months after graduation.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be current BSW or MSW students in good academic standing
  • All applicants must demonstrate an appreciation for cultural diversity
  • Students must have taken a child welfare-related elective, or demonstrate a passion for child welfare through personal or professional experiences
  • Applicants must be willing to complete their final full-time placement and ultimately work in Austin, San Antonio, or the surrounding central Texas area

Application process:

  • The first step is to contact the CWP Team to discuss the program early in the semester before you start your final field placement.  For example, if you are scheduled to start your final field placement in January and graduate in May, you should reach out to Title IV-E Child Welfare Partnership staff no later than the preceding August or September to discuss this internship option.
  • If recommended to move forward after meeting with CWP staff, the student will be provided with an application packet to complete and a formal interview will be scheduled with CPS regional administration.
  • Background and child abuse checks will be completed.
  • Students must have Field Office approval to start their full-time final field placement before they can receive final approval to participate in the CWP program.
  • There are limited funding slots available, and DFPS makes the ultimate decision on who is selected for the program.  The official Title IV-E contract is between the student and DFPS, not the university.
